Shaneen Powell joined SEED Maryland in 2010. She has served in several positions within the student life department before taking on the role of Director of Student Life and Residential Services. In her current role she oversees the after-school programs to include dormitories, student life staffing, athletics, community schools staffing and programs as well as residential services for on campus residents.
Innovation, Commitment, and Understanding (ICU) is an acronym Shaneen has created and embedded in her work to provide the best quality of service. Through her creative approach to ICU, she has been able to lead processes that reflect new ideas, understand organizational needs, and operate with a commitment to fidelity.
In her experience as a leader, Shaneen understands that some of the best discussions come from the bottom up and building employee morale is paramount to the longevity of a company. This perspective has allowed her to grow teams and develop staff to their full potential.
Shaneen attended Coppin State University for undergraduate studies and Goucher College for graduate studies, where she earned a Master’s in Education with a focus on at-risk learners. As an educator, she has worked with youth for 20+ years, both in a residential and in a school setting. Her previous work experience includes managing a staff of 40+ and working as an educational consultant and manager in various positions within K-12 and higher education. Some of her current work involves strategic enrollment in higher education, and developing research to help college graduates sustain a career after graduation.
Shaneen considers herself a life-long learner. Her personal goal to continuously evolve as a professional has allowed her to extend and refine her learning to overcome obstacles, embrace change, and remain steadfast in bringing organization aspirations to fruition.
